National Kitten Day

Our favorite furry felines get their chance to be in the spotlight on July 10th, for it’s National Kitten Day! Founded by cat-lover and animal advocate Colleen Paige in the early 2000s, this day highlights how precious and adoptable these treasured animals are. In fact, the day is intended to promote the adoption of kittens and adult cats alike! Now, who wouldn’t love to bring a sweet, fuzzy kitten home to the family?

I digress! As we celebrate kittens in all their cuddly glory, let’s delve into their history, importance, and benefits to humankind!

Cats: A Fluffy History

Cats have been around for thousands of years, and they’ve grown in popularity in tandem with our melting hearts. The first cats were thought to have been domesticated anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 years ago! Ancient Egyptians even worshipped and loved them. Their wild hearts have descended from fierce Middle Eastern wildcats, but they’ll pounce into our families just as quickly as they’ll hunt a wayward mouse. Look below for a visual of the long and happy history of our feline friends.

The Benefits of Owning a Kitten

Aside from the joy of fuzzy paws pelting your face in morning greeting, kittens can bring many benefits to a pet owner’s life. Not only that, but you can improve theirs as well! With the cutest symbiotic relationship in history in mind, let’s see how our fur babies can brighten our lives!

  • Anxiety Reduction: According to US Service Animals, pet cats can improve psychological health and reduce the symptoms of anxiety. The soothing purr of a cat can lower your heart rate and put you at ease with a release of oxytocin, keeping panic and worry at bay. Some call it “the healing purr”, and many cats have successfully become therapy animals. This is also known as an emotional support animal.
  • Stress Relief: Similarly to how cats reduce anxiety symptoms, the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University states that cats can provide “a safe and effective therapy” for stress and “an appreciable benefit to your mood.” They cited a study in which college students pet a cat for ten minutes, which found a significant decrease in their cortisol, or stress hormone, levels.
  • Companionship: Kittens are socialites! Healthline states that “people who invest in this cross-species bonding may see benefits in their human-to-human relationships,” so cats can promote healthy human relationships! Even better, they can do it all while bonding with you and becoming an invaluable friend. Whether you like humans or kittens better, you won’t ever be lonely with a soft cuddle buddy around.
  • Pest Control: As natural-born hunters, most cats are quite excellent at hunting rats, moles, bugs, and other small vermin. If you’re lucky, you may even get rewarded with a trophy of their most recent prey!

Appreciate Your Felines!

As we celebrate kittens on this lovely national holiday, hold your furry motorboat close to your heart. If you don’t have a feline friend yet, consider adopting one from a local shelter! There are always animals in need of a good home. Cat populations are increasing by the day, which means more and more shelters are filling up with stray felines. If you’re able, you could benefit not only a kitten but yourself. Have a great National Kitten Day, and thanks for reading!

National Video Game Day

Today, July 8th, is National Video Game Day! While the origins of this exciting day are a bit ambiguous, gamers across the globe can appreciate its celebration of how our favorite pastime has evolved over the years. From Atari to PlayStation 5, thrilling first-person shooters, MMORPGs, and more have fostered a love for gaming worldwide. Let’s see what all the buzz is about and how this electric recreation has changed over time.

Overcoming the Controversy of Gaming

Parents, teachers, and skeptics alike have frowned upon video games throughout history, attributing them to increased violence, lower school performance, and social isolation. As the gaming industry has evolved, however, we’ve learned that there is more to gaming than meets the eye.

For instance, puzzle and strategy games can stretch the mind and promote critical thinking in people of all ages, and multiplayer games foster teamwork and communication skills. Aside from siblings bickering over the best controller, people who problem-solve together during a multiplayer game have been shown to develop better social interactions out in the real world.

Psych Central says it best in their article Video Games Can Help Boost Social, Memory & Cognitive Skills. In it, the author cites a study from the American Psychological Association. Paraphrased, it states that while video games have been negatively linked to certain gaming addictions and possible depression when left unchecked, “[n]ew research…suggests such play actually may strengthen a range of cognitive skills such as spatial navigation, reasoning, memory and perception.”

So, while individuals can be negatively impacted if they hole up in their rooms without seeing the sun, a healthy balance of gaming and touching grass from time to time can lead to a positive impact on our brains!

The Evolution of Video Games

The first recorded video game in history is a bit of a toss-up. The American Physical Society gives that designation to a 1958 game called “Tennis for Two”, while others believe the first game was “Pong”, created in 1970. “Tennis for Two” was created by a physicist by the name of William Higinbotham. He was tasked with creating a captivating exhibit for visitors of Brookhaven National Laboratory, as other exhibits had proven quite boring. “Pong”, on the other hand, was created by none other than the founder of the arcade-giant Atari, Nolan Bushnell, and his co-creator, Allan Alcorn.

Whether “Tennis for Two” or “Pong” holds the title of the first video game, LG and others consider the 70s to be the birth of the gaming industry. Games have evolved exponentially since then, from arcade games in giant boxes to the handheld games and big consoles we know and love today. Let’s break it down in a fun, albeit shortened, timeline of the gaming industry!

Global Forgiveness Day

Celebrated on July 7, Global Forgiveness Day is a powerful reminder to let go of grudges, set aside grievances, and embrace the transformative power of forgiveness. This annual observance encourages individuals worldwide to release the weight of resentment and anger, ultimately benefiting their own mental and physical well-being. By understanding the importance of forgiveness and its positive impact on health, we can begin to cultivate a more compassionate and harmonious world.

What is Forgiveness?

Forgiveness holds different meanings for different people. At its core, it involves letting go of negative emotions, resentment, and the desire for revenge. It’s not about forgetting or excusing the damage done; rather, it is a conscious choice to free oneself from the burden of holding onto grudges. Forgiveness is a personal journey that enables us to heal and move forward. It promotes peace within ourselves and our relationships. Holding onto grudges can have detrimental effects on both mental and physical health, leading to increased stress, anxiety, even chronic conditions.

How Does Forgiveness Help?

“There is an enormous physical burden to being hurt and disappointed,” says Karen Swartz, M.D., director of the Mood Disorders Adult Consultation Clinic at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The act of forgiveness can alleviate this burden and bring many benefits for our well-being. Here are some ways forgiveness can positively impact our lives:

  1. Reduced Stress: Letting go of resentment and anger can significantly lower stress levels. Forgiveness frees us from the constant rumination that keeps us trapped in negative emotions.
  2. Improved Mental Health: Forgiveness promotes mental well-being by reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger. It allows us to release emotional baggage and experience a sense of emotional freedom.
  3. Enhanced Relationships: By forgiving others, we create space for healthier and more fulfilling relationships. It fosters empathy, understanding, and a willingness to resolve conflicts peacefully.
  4. Increased Self-Esteem: Forgiving ourselves and others empowers us to break free from feelings of guilt and self-blame. It nurtures self-compassion and self-acceptance, leading to improved self-esteem.
  5. Better Physical Health: The emotional weight lifted through forgiveness can positively impact physical health. It’s been associated with reduced blood pressure, improved heart health, and enhanced immune function.

How to Forgive

Incorporating forgiveness into our lives is a gradual process that requires self-reflection, empathy, and openness. Here are a few strategies to help cultivate forgiveness:

  1. Practice empathy: Seek to understand the motivations and experiences of the person who hurt you. Recognize that everyone has their own struggles and flaws.
  2. Let go of revenge: Revenge only perpetuates a cycle of negativity. Instead, focus on healing yourself and finding inner peace.
  3. Embrace self-forgiveness: Forgive yourself for any mistakes or regrets you made. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion, just as you would with others.
  4. Seek support: If forgiveness feels challenging, consider seeking support from friends, family, or a therapist. They can provide guidance and offer a safe space for processing emotions.

Global Forgiveness Day serves as a reminder of the transformative power of forgiveness and its vital role in promoting personal well-being. By choosing to let go of grudges, we liberate ourselves from the heavy burden of resentment and pave the way for a healthier and happier life. Embrace forgiveness, starting today, and experience the profound positive effects it can have on your mental, emotional, and physical health.
