National Mutt Day

Hey there, pet lovers and dog enthusiasts! Get ready to wag your tails in excitement because July 31 is National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day shines a spotlight on our furry friends who sometimes get overlooked in the canine community. It’s all about celebrating the pups who defy labels and embrace their one-of-a-kind identities. They remind us that beauty lies not just in conformity, but in the delightful diversity of mixed genes!

What is a Mutt?

Mutts go by many names – mixed-breeds, crossbreeds, hybrids, and more. However, what sets them apart is their unique blend of charm, looks, and personality. Picture those adorable lab eyes, playful poodle curls, strong shepherd gait, and who knows what other wonderful traits mixed in one beloved fur baby. It’s a recipe for furry perfection!

These lovable combinations make wonderful additions to any family, pawing their way into our homes and hearts with unwavering love and devotion.

The love for mutts is so vast that we can’t contain it to just one day a year! That’s right – we celebrate mixed breed dogs twice, annually – not only on July 31, but also on December 2. That’s double the tail-wagging, belly-rubbing, and ear-scratching goodness!

This special holiday is not just about celebrating the mutts we already adore, but also about encouraging others to consider adopting one. Thousands of mixed breed dogs are eagerly waiting for their forever homes, hoping to find someone who will cherish them for the unique and lovable companions they are.

What’s there to Love?

All dogs deserve love, regardless of their background. They want to make you happy, play with you, dine, run, and protect you. That’s how it is for all dogs, but here are more reasons why mutts deserve your appreciation and attention.

If you’re looking for a loyal, fun-loving fur buddy, why not give a mutt a chance to shower you with love and joy?

Mixed-Breed Marvels

Though diseases plague all dogs, regardless of how pure they’re bred, it’s true that purebred have it the toughest. They often run higher risks of genetic issues due to the parents sharing similar genetic makeup. This similarity increases the chances of the dog inheriting diseases and conditions common to their breed.

Unlike their purebred counterparts, mutts often boast robust health and extended lifespans. Their diverse genetic makeup grants them stronger immune systems, shielding them from a higher risk of genetic conditions. You can expect less stress over your mixed-breed’s health, fewer costs, and less veterinary care.

Above all else, you can expect a longer lifespan for your beloved fur baby.

Tail-Wagging Temperament

Many inexperienced and first-time owners expect raising a dog to prove easy. Surely raising children is the more daunting task? And when getting a good boy companion, people may become tempted to go purebred. Even if you’re not guaranteed the healthiest around, surely you’re guaranteed perfect behavior?

Turns out, that’s not the case. Purebred have specific purposes and are bred for such tasks. In many cases, their makeup could focus on hunting, which may have the dog chasing after every squirrel that dares show its face. Other cases could concern herding, making your furry companion overprotective of you because anything could prove dangerous.

However, mutts don’t suffer from these genetic impulses as much. Because their makeup is more diverse, they’ve become more laid-back, proving adaptable and trainable for all purposes.

Distinctly One of a Kind

With each mixed-breed dog being an exceptional fusion, predicting their physical traits is an adventure. These one-of-a-kind canines turn heads, piquing strangers’ curiosity about their captivating qualities. Their carefree charm and individuality set them apart from conventional purebreds.

However, that isn’t to say your hybrid is a bag of surprises. By looking closely, you can get a good idea on what to expect as she grows. It’s like watching children grow up.

Pay attention to their feet – or in this case, paws. Larger paws often mean he’ll grow accordingly to match their size. Puppies with snub-nosed faces typically retain that appearance. You can expect this to grow rounder and larger over time.

These subtle clues can offer insight into the transformations your puppy will undergo on her journey to adulthood.

Multitalented & Versatile Canines

One fantastic aspect of crossbreeds is their versatility. They can excel as service animals just like their purebred counterparts. Whether you need a faithful companion for guiding, drug detection, or search and rescue missions, these multitalented mutts are up for the challenge.

So don’t underestimate mutts when it comes to skill and responsibility. Their competence matches that of purebred dogs, proving their versatility in a myriad of tasks.

Become a Rescue Hero

Consider adopting a mutt near you. By adopting a mixed breed from a shelter, you become a lifesaver.

By choosing to welcome a crossbreed into your home, you are actively opposing puppy mills. Puppy mills are breeding facilities that prioritize profit over the well-being of dogs. These mills often subject dogs to inhumane conditions, inadequate care, and unhealthy breeding practices. By adopting a crossbreed from a shelter or rescue, you contribute to the fight against these unethical breeding operations, providing a loving home to a dog in need.

Welcoming a mutt into your home creates space for another deserving dog at the shelter. Break the cycle of puppy mills and backyard breeders by choosing adoption; prioritize humane practices over profit.

National Lasagna Day

Layers of savory delectability await today, for it is National Lasagna Day! July 29th marks a day full of preheated ovens, boiled noodles, simmering sauces, and sizzling meats and veggies! Grab your aprons and ready your forks, for this holiday is sure to make your stomach rumble!

Join us as we dive into the history of this dish and meet a notable character that may just love lasagna more than me! From big orange cats to Greek etymology, there’s a lot to learn about National Lasagna Day!

A Certain Cartoon Cat’s Favorite Day

Credit: Garfield by Jim Davis

There’s no one I imagine rejoices more on such a delicious day than Garfield, the cartoon cat created by Jim Davis in the late 70s. This lovable loaf loves nothing more than lazing about, hating Mondays, and munching on a big pan of cheesy lasagna!

However, did you know that the inspiration for this feline’s favorite food stems from Davis’s own love for the dish? He said as much in an interview noted here, stating that “Yeah, I love lasagna. I thought it would be funny to have a cat who likes lasagna but as it turns out, I hear from people all the time that their cats love lasagna.”

Wait a minute. Cats eat lasagna in real life? Well, that may be, but it’s certainly not good for them! While the noodles won’t necessarily hurt their tiny tummies, onions and garlic can make them seriously ill. Furthermore, cats are generally lactose intolerant, so cheese isn’t such a good idea either. While our favorite cartoon cat may chow down on today’s celebrated dish, please refrain from supplying the same meal to your cat!

Learn about Lasagna!

As a human, we can definitely enjoy an Italian pasta dish or two while our cats lay about, so let’s learn about this tasty meal! For instance, did you know that the word ‘lasagna’ comes from the Greek word for the first pasta? The lasagna we know today, however, originated in Naples, Italy in the late 1800s when tomato sauce was introduced to the recipe. Learn more about the layered pasta below in a fun, saucy infographic!
