National Friendship Day

Friendship is a beautiful gift. Today, on August 6th, we get to celebrate the gift of friendship through the aptly named national holiday, National Friendship Day! Whether you are celebrating lifelong friends, using this day to form new friendships, or cuddling your furry animal friends at home, it is a day to be cherished by all.

National Friendship Day is a national holiday that everyone can appreciate and participate in. Join us as we reflect on the relationships that take the definition of chosen family to a new level and expand our social horizons!

Partners in Crime

There’s nothing more fun than going on goofy adventures and getting into shenanigans with your friends. This national holiday celebrates the antics of chaotic friendship and serves as a springboard for partners in crime across the country!

National Friendship Day was first founded by Joyce Hall of the Hallmark Cards company in the early 1900s, christening the first Sunday of August as a day of amiable companionship. Five years later, the US Congress made it official.

Since then, international and world friendship days have joined in the fun, and Winnie the Pooh even became the Ambassador of Friendship in 1998! What started as a marketing ploy spread like wildfire and sparked an ongoing celebration of platonic love.

Companionship is something every human seeks, and as social creatures, friendship fits the bill perfectly. Wherever you fall on the introvert-extrovert spectrum, you’re sure to find at least one partner in crime to seize the day with!

Best Friends are like Family

Liz here. In my 26 years on this planet, I’ve made, sustained, lost, and sought many friendships. Through the trial and error of discovering what friendship truly means, I’ve learned one very important thing: true best friends are like family.

Take, for instance, my partner in crime and co-writer of the blog, Yuki. To this day, our friendship has an ironclad foundation. Yuki is my family member not through blood, but through years of standing by me through thick and thin. We don’t even live in the same state, and until recently, we lived in different time zones!

Companionship doesn’t scratch the surface of our friendship, and distance has never defined it. I met Yuki when we were both kids, chatting online about Pokemon and Neopets, of all things! We formed a friendship through writing and gaming that has endured for more than a decade. We also share a tight-knit group of likeminded friends that we consider family as well.

On this national holiday of friendship, keep your chosen family close and cherish those platonic relationships! They could last a lifetime.

How to Celebrate National Friendship Day

Celebrate this joyous national holiday of friendship by enjoying quality time with your loved ones, reaching out to an old friend, giving out homemade friendship bracelets, and more! This day is molded around how you define your friendships and what it means to be together, so embrace it! Whether you’re seeking out a new community of likeminded people or reminiscing about childhood adventures with your sister from another mister, may this day reflect the joy of radiant friendship.

National Coloring Book Day

Embrace the Colors of Childhood

Get ready to bring out your inner child and embark on a journey of creativity and relaxation! It’s time to celebrate National Coloring Book Day! This vibrant holiday falls on August 2, and it’s all about reliving those good old childhood playdates with a colorful twist!

Coloring Adventures of the Past

Remember those carefree days when you could spend hours with a box of crayons, creating colorful masterpieces on any surface you could find? Oh, the joy of unleashing our artistic souls without a care in the world! As we grew older, those innocent coloring sessions became a distant memory, tucked away with other cherished childhood moments.

However, coloring books are back in action. This time, they’ve got some serious grown-up attention! Researchers and medical professionals have discovered that coloring isn’t just a child’s pastime; it’s a proven tool for improving our health and well-being.

Speaking of childhood memories, I remember how I got my first coloring book. I was small, maybe six, armed with colorful crayons and a wild imagination. I didn’t understand that walls weren’t for coloring on, especially after my dad had recently finished painting my bedroom a soft pink.

So, of course I decided to decorate my bedroom walls, too. Much to my parents’ surprise (and slight frustration), they discovered my artistic endeavors in the form of doodles and drawings all over the place. I think it’s safe to say I got off pretty easy.

Instead of scolding me, my parents embraced my creative spirit and bought me my very first coloring book. From that day on, the walls were safe, and I had a whole book full of exciting illustrations to explore.

Benefits of Coloring: A Rainbow of Wellness

Fast forward to today, and I’m thrilled to see that coloring has come a long way since those wall-art days. It’s not just about cartoon characters and simple designs anymore.

Adult coloring books have become the latest wellness and relaxation trend, with intricate patterns of flowers, artwork, mandalas, and animals. Even beloved brands like Crayola have hopped on the adult coloring bandwagon!

Why is coloring getting all this grown-up attention? Because medical professionals and researchers have revealed the positive impact of coloring for over a decade now. Let’s take a colorful journey through some of these fantastic benefits:

1. Mindfulness and Stress Relief: Coloring promotes mindfulness, allowing us to focus on the present moment and escape the noise of our busy lives. As we color, our brains engage in a meditative state, soothing the mind and reducing stress. It’s like a therapeutic getaway without leaving your favorite coloring spot!

2. Improved Brain Function: Activate different parts of your brain as you color your way to better brain function. The creative process awakens your imagination while the logical side busies with shapes and forms.

3. Enhanced Motor Skills: Intricate coloring designs require precision and hand-eye coordination, giving your motor skills a fantastic workout. It’s like a creative gym session for your hands.

4. Better Sleep: Swap your late-night screen time for some coloring before bed; you might find yourself dozing off into dreamland more easily. Coloring helps to relax your mind, promoting better sleep quality.

5. Embracing Imperfection: Coloring is all about embracing imperfections and letting go of judgments. There are no right or wrong ways to color, and it’s a noncompetitive activity. Just enjoy the journey and let your creativity flow.

6. Anxiety Reduction: Studies have shown that coloring can lower heart rate, reduce anxiety. It even enhances mood and mindfulness. It’s a colorful antidote to the stresses of daily life!

Unwind and Rediscover the Joy of Coloring

As you can see, adult coloring is more than just a fun pastime; it’s a tool for practicing good mental health and finding happiness between the lines. No wonder coloring books have skyrocketed in popularity, with websites and places like the Smithsonian Libraries joining in the celebration of National Coloring Book Day!

On this relaxing occasion, we encourage you to take some time for yourself, unwind, and let the colors fill your world with happiness. Gather your favorite coloring supplies, set aside that extra hour of ‘me’ time, or host a coloring book party with friends – the choice is yours!

There’s no better way to celebrate National Coloring Book Day than by indulging in some colorful fun and rediscovering the pure joy of being a kid again. Happy National Coloring Book Day, everyone!
