Quench Your Curiosity – Find a New Favorite Holiday Today!
Friendship is a beautiful gift. Today, on August 6th, we get to celebrate the gift of friendship through the aptly named national holiday, National Friendship Day! Whether you are celebrating lifelong friends, using this day to form new friendships, or cuddling your furry animal friends at home, it is a day to be cherished by all.
National Friendship Day is a national holiday that everyone can appreciate and participate in. Join us as we reflect on the relationships that take the definition of chosen family to a new level and expand our social horizons!

There’s nothing more fun than going on goofy adventures and getting into shenanigans with your friends. This national holiday celebrates the antics of chaotic friendship and serves as a springboard for partners in crime across the country!
National Friendship Day was first founded by Joyce Hall of the Hallmark Cards company in the early 1900s, christening the first Sunday of August as a day of amiable companionship. Five years later, the US Congress made it official.
Since then, international and world friendship days have joined in the fun, and Winnie the Pooh even became the Ambassador of Friendship in 1998! What started as a marketing ploy spread like wildfire and sparked an ongoing celebration of platonic love.
Companionship is something every human seeks, and as social creatures, friendship fits the bill perfectly. Wherever you fall on the introvert-extrovert spectrum, you’re sure to find at least one partner in crime to seize the day with!

Liz here. In my 26 years on this planet, I’ve made, sustained, lost, and sought many friendships. Through the trial and error of discovering what friendship truly means, I’ve learned one very important thing: true best friends are like family.
Take, for instance, my partner in crime and co-writer of the blog, Yuki. To this day, our friendship has an ironclad foundation. Yuki is my family member not through blood, but through years of standing by me through thick and thin. We don’t even live in the same state, and until recently, we lived in different time zones!
Companionship doesn’t scratch the surface of our friendship, and distance has never defined it. I met Yuki when we were both kids, chatting online about Pokemon and Neopets, of all things! We formed a friendship through writing and gaming that has endured for more than a decade. We also share a tight-knit group of likeminded friends that we consider family as well.
On this national holiday of friendship, keep your chosen family close and cherish those platonic relationships! They could last a lifetime.

Celebrate this joyous national holiday of friendship by enjoying quality time with your loved ones, reaching out to an old friend, giving out homemade friendship bracelets, and more! This day is molded around how you define your friendships and what it means to be together, so embrace it! Whether you’re seeking out a new community of likeminded people or reminiscing about childhood adventures with your sister from another mister, may this day reflect the joy of radiant friendship.
