A Rainbow of Goodies

Sour candies come in many shapes, flavors, textures, and sizes today. Tangy gummies, tart candy ropes, and citrusy lemon drops are just a few of the options you can choose from. Back in the day, however, this popular treat was an acquired taste. Some disliked the shock of the tongue-twisting new treat, and others were wary of the chemicals that could create such a sensation.

The first sour candies were created around the 1950s, but one of the biggest candy booms in America came from Warhead candy in 1993. Peter De Yager explored Taiwain to find the most sour treat he could get his hands on. There, he found the original Warhead candy invented in 1975 and brought it back to the States through The Foreign Candy Company.

Another popular sour candy is Sour Patch Kids. Originally ‘Mars Men’, this confection originates from Canada. In 1970s Ontario, Frank Galatolie invented the sour-then-sweet gummy, and in 1985 they were brought to markets throughout the United States.

The founder of National Sour Candy Day, the American Licorice Company, created Sour Punch candies in 1990! They started today’s holiday back in 2015, and they celebrate it to this day. They even have a limited-time giveaway puzzle if you want to check it out!

Over time, through inventive promotions and holidays like Halloween, sour candy grew into an exciting sugary snack that now flies off the shelves. Today, it’s a staple in stores and homes alike!
